Foster's Feat Artistic Renderings of Youth at 36 | This Week


FLORENCE – Artistic Renderings of Youth, a juried exhibit of work by 7th - 12th grade artists from Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties, will be on display at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence through March 31. The exhibit was founded by Florence art educator Jerry Foster, and it is celebrating its 30th year. 
March is nationally recognized as Youth Art Month, and this exhibit provides an opportunity for the community to discover the young artistic talent in our area. The competition is coordinated by middle school and high school art teachers to give students a 
chance to exhibit their artwork and receive recognition for their talent.  This year artwork representing 19 different schools will be exhibited. Ribbons are awarded in three grade divisions: Division 1:7th and 8th grades, Division 2: 9th and 10th grades, and Division 3:11th and 12th grades.   ....

City of Montgomery Announces Winners in Virtual Contest Celebrating MLK's 92nd Birthday

The City of Montgomery on Monday announced the winners of a virtual contest created to commemorate the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 2021 MLK Student Perspectives Contest asked Montgomery students to submit a brief video presentation of their favorite quote from one of Dr. King’s speeches, sermons or interviews and then explain why that quote resonates with them today.
“We congratulate this year’s MLK Student Perspectives Contest winners and applaud the overall quality of entries,” Mayor Steven L. Reed said. “Each student who participated articulated a deep understanding of Dr. King’s vision and how it relates to building a better community today. I look forward to honoring these future leaders at the next Council Meeting.” ....

In January 2017, former Phenix City Vice Chancellor Dr. David White formed a committee of civic, community, and TROY volunteers to plan local events and projects in Phenix City and Russell County in celebration of the Alabama Bicentennial, a three-year celebration of the people, places, and events that form Alabama’s history.
The Alabama Bicentennial Committee in Phenix City and Russell County recently produced a series of successful projects as a result of over three years of planning and dedication. One project involved the commission of a full-sized statue of Albert Patterson, a prominent politician and attorney in Phenix City, Alabama, with funding from the Russell County Commission, Russell County Tourism, Alabama Department of Tourism, CTV Beam, WestRock, ....
