1. She is a skilled tennis player Along with performing, Sherman started playing tennis when she was a child, continuing to compete in the sport in high school and college. Though she s currently focused on music – or as American Idol host Ryan Seacrest put it, traded in her tennis racket for a microphone – she told the Herald-Tribune she still loves the sport and intends to play it for the rest of her life recreationally. 2. She comes from an athletic family Sherman s grandmother, Lorraine Williams Bryant, profiled in a 2012 Herald-Tribune article, made history as the first Black player to win a U.S. National tennis championship. Meanwhile, her father is Ray Sherman, who played football at Fresno State before past stints as a wide receivers coach (among other positions) for NFL teams including the St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers. ....
Sherman started with a soulful rendition of “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” by recent Grammy-winning pop star Dua Lipa, whose music Sherman also performed during her audition. Then for her duet, she was joined by Brian McKnight, performing his self-penned 1999 hit “Back at One.” “It’s the first time I’m actually going to sing this song as a duet,” said Brian McKnight, which Sherman responded to with an incredulous “I’m sorry?” Sherman said there was pressure in performing McKnight’s song with him, messing up the words during rehearsal.
