President of Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce Colin Ahern welcomed businesses to the Chamber’s recent 2021 AGM, the second such AGM to be held online.
Mr Ahern, Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, was re-elected to his second year as President, and Brian Keyes, Iconic Newspapers, was elected as Vice President.
In his address, Mr Ahern said the manner in which Kilkenny businesses adapted to ensure their survival and the safety of their customers and staff must be commended. Certainty on financial supports and the reopening strategy for businesses over the coming months are required from today s Cabinet meeting on Covid-19 restrictions, Chambers Ireland has said.
The organisation, which represents 41 individual chambers of commerce around the country, said timelines for the reopening need to contain targets and be realistic.
First and foremost, the priority for our members is that the reopening be sustainable, said Ian Talbot, chief executive of the organisation.
We must not find ourselves in the same situation as last year where reopening too quickly was followed by a spike in infections and another lockdown. ....

Ireland among most ambitious on climate action, Tánaiste insists

With Irelandâs new climate law, the country âis now one of the most ambitious countries in the world on climateâ, according to TÃ¡naiste Leo Varadkar.
âClimate change is a threat to all of us and transitioning to a low-carbon economy is a major priority for the Government,â he said in address to the annual energy show staged by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
âOur targets will require a huge shift in the energy we use, how we manage our waste, our housing stock and transport systems,â he added.
Businesses had a really important role to play in the overall decarbonisation effort that was about to be pursued across the economy, Mr Varadkar said. ....

Most Irish businesses will have to re-skill and undergo radical change in the coming decade to meet the climate change challenge as Ireland seeks to halve its carbon emissions, Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has said.
Announcing a five-year national initiative –
Climate Ready – designed to equip businesses with the skills and practical tools needed, which will initially benefit 1,100 companies, Mr Harris acknowledged companies had already experienced “massive” upheaval caused by Brexit and Covid-19. ....
