Chamber Corner: Worcester chamber successfully pushing for expanded vocational school access David Sullivan The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce is helping to take the lead statewide in advocating for increased access to the vocational technical education system in Massachusetts. The chamber is a co-founding partner of the Alliance for Vocational Technical Education (AVTE), a statewide coalition of other chambers of commerce, workforce development groups, associations of school administrators and social justice groups. This year, AVTE has been focused on passing several bills through the state Legislature that expand access to vocational technical schools and programs. These bills, S.357, S.348, H.666, and H.652, were recently referred to the Joint Committee on Education and received a hearing July 6. The chamber, as well as its allies in AVTE, testified in support at the virtual hearing. ....

Murray While undoubtedly there are new levels of private investment taking place in Worcester that create jobs, expand the tax base, and generate economic activity, there has been one negative issue that has continued to fester: the amount of trash and litter along city streets, and in neighborhoods and environmentally sensitive areas. Here at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, we have observed this problem and have regularly heard complaints about it from chamber member businesses and chamber board members alike. Recently, former Worcester Mayor Raymond Mariano, who now writes a weekly column in the Telegram and Gazette, wrote about litter throughout the city, as did Worcester Magazine columnist Janice Harvey. Both correctly stated that a more collective effort was needed to address this challenge. ....
