The commencement speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 15 is Jovita Carranza, former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) from 2020-21 and treasurer of the United States from 2017-20. If conditions had allowed the traditional ceremony in Knott Arena, Carranza would have been the commencement speaker. She will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the ceremony. ....
Hamilton County Schools Announce New Principals Monday, May 10, 2021 Hamilton County Schools announced several personnel updates Monday. Andrea Johnson is the new principal at Barger Academy. She previously served as the principal at Lakeside Academy, a Level 5 school. Ms. Johnson, a 26-year veteran of Hamilton County Schools, first joined the district as a teacher and taught for 13 years. In 2008, she moved to the district level as a secondary literacy coordinator, and later served as assistant principal at both Woodmore Elementary School and Lakeside Academy. Ms. Johnson has been the principal at Lakeside Academy since 2014, where she started a Destination Imagination class to engage students in STEM challenges, creativity, and collaboration. She is the recipient of an Annenberg Foundation Grant (2017), and made it to the Global Finals of the first Destination Imagination Competition (2015-2016). ....
Congratulations to our May 2021 Spotlight teacher, Chelsea Garcia. Ms. Garcia is a kindergarten teacher at East Elementary. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Education degree in Instructional Leadership from Howard Payne University. She is a certified teacher holding a professional license for teaching core subjects (EC-6th) and a principal certification (EC-12th). Ms. Garcia served as both a long-term substitute and a certified tutor at East Elementary before becoming a full-time teacher there in 2016. Ms. Garcia is a hard worker, not only for her students, but for her kindergarten team, her school, and the district’s English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) program. She puts in endless extra hours along with her co-workers to ensure that her team and students are taken care of. ....

Josh joined the Division in 2006 as a classroom teacher and currently serves as a Vice Principal at Riverstone Public School. He had the opportunity to serve as a Vice Principal at Hillside Community School for four years from 2016 to 2020 and looks forward to returning to the Hillside community again. Josh earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and a Masters in Education with a focus on Instructional Leadership, Indigenous Studies and Educational Research from the University of Calgary. Josh’s educational leadership philosophy is: “It is imperative that a school environment fosters the needs of each individual student through the creation of a culture that is safe and inclusive to everyone. Authentic, engaging learning experiences are necessary in order to mould the creativity and passionate drive we wish to see in our students.” ....
