Arts and Culture Queen Mary launches its Conversations Week

Queen Mary University of London
In 2020, Arts and Culture at Queen Mary University of London invited UK-based artists to converse with academics from across the university, using its Higher Education Innovation Fund. A dentist spoke to a sculptor. A mathematician to a choreographer. A dramatist to an opera singer.
While an unforeseen pandemic limited human contact for many of us, these artists and academics found ways to talk. They held conversations about climate change, mental health, housework, racism, childcare, justice, wellbeing. They exchanged knowledge. Expertise. Then the artists set to work.
The results are original artworks and creative responses that could not have happened without conversations between academics and artists. They remind us of the power of art and the impact of connecting deep thinkers across fields. Watch the video on Vimeo. ....

Study examines how SARS-CoV-2 affects body’s vital organs
University of Alberta researchers are recruiting COVID-19 patients for a study to learn how the SARS-CoV-2 virus affects some of the body’s most vital organs.
The team, led by Ian Paterson, a cardiologist and professor of medicine in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is using new MRI techniques it developed to detect injury to the lungs, heart and brain. The researchers hope to get a clearer picture of how the virus causes inflammation in the organs, how long it takes for symptoms to run their course and how it affects people’s functional abilities. ....

Not Just For Numbers: Anchoring Biases Decisions Involving Sight, Sound, and Touch

Findings offer critical steps to better understanding the decision-making process
Numeric anchoring is a long-established technique of marketing communication. Once a price is mentioned, that number serves as the basis for – or “anchors” – all future discussions and decisions. But new research shows that this phenomenon is not limited to decisions that involve numbers, the use and understanding of which require high-level cognitive thinking. Anchoring also biases judgments at relatively low levels of cognition when no numbers are involved.
In research recently published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Gaurav Jain, an assistant professor in the Lally School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, demonstrated that anchoring even occurs in perceptual domains, like sight, sound, and touch. ....
