The Govan-born-and-bred retired football manager who won the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1999, during his successful reign as Manchester United boss, has secured another moment to remember on Merseyside. Scotland s most successful football manager landed a remarkable 62/1 treble on the opening day of the Aintree Grand National festival, securing a hat-trick with three winners in the opening three races. He said it was his “best day” at the races, which is a high bar to clear after more than two decades as an owner which have included Rock Of Gibraltar’s seven-race run in Group One races on the Flat and two victories in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park’s famous Boxing Day meeting. ....
UPDATED 9:00AM, APR 8 2021 The Shunter, one of the horses of the season, has been snapped up by leading owner JP McManus on the eve of his Grade 1 debut in the SSS Super Alloys Manifesto Novices Chase (1.45) at Aintree on Thursday. Winner of the Greatwood Hurdle earlier this season, The Shunter has since secured a £100,000 bonus when following up his Morebattle Hurdle triumph at Kelso by landing the Paddy Power Plate at the Cheltenham Festival. Confirming that McManus had swooped for the Emmet Mullins-trained eight-year-old, the owner s racing manager Frank Berry said: There are a few things to be ironed out but the deal is done and hopefully he will run in our colours tomorrow. He will stay in training with Emmet after tomorrow. ....
Big races The day one feature at Aintree is the Betway Bowl (2.50), a Grade 1 over 3m1f and featuring plenty of familiar names. The race has an illustrious honour roll, including two-time winners Wayward Lad, Docklands Express, First Gold and Silviniaco Conti. Also on the card is the Aintree Hurdle (3.25) featuring several top-class performers including 2017 winner Buveur D Air, while Britain s best juvenile hurdlers clash at 2.20 and novice chasers do battle in the opening Manifesto Novices Chase (1.45). The first of three races over the National fences at the meeting comes at 4.05 when 23 runners contest the Rose Paterson Randox Foxhunters Open Hunters Chase, while some exciting prospects will be in action in the concluding Grade 2 Mares Bumper (5.15). ....
