Weekly Fishing Report: June 1, 2021

Weekly Fishing Report: June 1, 2021
Los Alamos Daily Post
One of the results of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be an increase in the fishing pressure, especially on our trout streams and lakes. It appears that this is not just limited to New Mexico, but is happening nationwide. The pressure on our fishing resources has increased dramatically.
Our State Game and Fish Department stocks thousands of trout every week to try to satisfy the demand. There are limits to how much stocking thousands of hatchery fish can do. For a lot of anglers, catching their limit of five fish-fish –per-day is the goal. Stringers of freshly-stocked rainbow trout are commonly pictured on several of the Facebook websites dedicated to trout fishing in New Mexico. ....

West Marin prepares for extreme drought

Creeks are dwindling, reservoirs are draining, and water suppliers are sounding the alarm.
Marin declared a drought emergency this week, the latest step in a crisis that will only deepen into the summer. Water providers large and small are conserving and creating backup plans, and they are searching for new sources of water. Prospects of outside help are diminishing, so suppliers are turning to their customers to save them from running dry.
“You only have to drive by Nicasio Dam or Stafford Lake to see the dire conditions we are facing,” Supervisor Dennis Rodoni said. “Drought conditions are the worst we have seen in over 140 years in Marin. Please take this drought and recommendations from the water agencies seriously. While we have plenty of water for health and safety of our families, it is important that we do not waste any water.” ....

Public invited to comment on route designations for Taos Plateau
TAOS, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management Taos Field Office seeks public comment for designating motorized and non-motorized routes on the Taos Plateau. On May 13, the agency will release a draft Travel Management Plan (TMP) and associated Environmental Assessment (EA) called, “Horsethief Mesa,” encompassing 2,060 acres of the Taos Plateau, north of Arroyo Hondo, N.M. on the Rio Grande s east rim.
The Horsethief Mesa draft plan identifies potential routes and trails for public use and establishes an organized travel network while minimizing impacts to natural resources. The TMP addresses non-motorized and motorized travel, recreation and traditional access, protection of cultural resources, wildlife, vegetative communities, soils, and visual resources. The Taos Field Office conducted public scoping for route designations from July 22 through August 22, 2020. Based on that input, the agency dev ....

Weekly Fishing Report: May 5, 2021
Spring fishing conditions are underway in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
Streamflows are rising, especially in the Chama River above El Vado Lake. Lakes are warming up but still cold enough for trout to be cruising the shallows looking for food. Warmwater species like smallmouth bass and walleye are becoming more active. Insect hatches are happening, particularly the caddis hatch on the Rio Grande.
New Mexico State Parks are open to all visitors. Overnight camping is still by reservation only. Call 877.664.7787 for reservations. It is beneficial to check the state parks website for conditions at individual state parks when planning a trip to one of them: emnrd.state.nm.us/SPD/FindaPark.html. ....
