The old NSS Annapolis, otherwise known as the Naval Communications Station Washington, D.C., Transmitter, at Greenbury Point on the Severn River to the west of Annapolis, is not a place where one might expect to begin a discussion on monuments. But sometimes the most curious and intriguing of things are found in overlooked and unexpected places. The three red-and-white radio towers on the wooded peninsula, once used to communicate with submerged submarines, are the most prominent reminders of what was once a bustling and active radio transmitting facility. Though it is still a gunnery range and part of the NSA Annapolis facility where the Naval Academy s training tenders are docked, most of it has become a nature center. Open fields have replaced field transmitting equipment, and where the busy work of national defense went on, there is now only the work of birds building their nests, and deer foraging in the scrub. ....

Famed U.S. architect Ernest Flagg left his mark on Todt Hill from his Colonial-revival Flagg estate at 209 Flagg Place to more modest homes and cottages along the east shore. Ernest Flagg was born in Brooklyn in 1857, studied architecture at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and took on some notable projects early in his career. One was the classic Singer Building and Tower, which was the world’s tallest building, at 612 feet, in 1908 at 149 Broadway and Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan. ....
Favorite 5 Cool Spaces of 2020 Updated Dec 30, 2020; Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. This was an interrupted year in so many ways. When people stopped entering each other’s homes and started social distancing, I had to rethink what is cool about home spaces from the outside. Of the topics highlighted this year, my favorite stories were; the architect Ernest Flagg, the mansard rooftops, Tudor homes, front porches (where we spent most of our days in 2020), and one we got inside before the pandemic, Casa Belvedere. I encourage getting on your warmest winter coats, masks, and boots and walking around your neighborhood this winter to take a look at the different styles of architecture that you live around. ....
Cool Spaces: Why does Santa come down your chimney? Updated Dec 15, 2020; Posted Dec 15, 2020 The Seguine-Burke Mansion, the Cape House and a home on Todt Hill are examples of brick and stone chimneys. (Staten Island Advance/Jan Somma-Hammel) Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. As I drove around Staten Island recently, I noticed a bunch of gorgeous chimneys. Some were simple; some were elaborate. And some were so beautifully constructed that they made the house look more complete. Either way, as the legend goes, Santa will magically find his way down the chimney of all those who celebrate Christmas. An ornate topped stone chimney on large Todt Hill mansion. December 8, 2020.
