Downtown Columbia cafes reflect on their business this past year

COLUMBIA - Thursday officially marked the one-year anniversary of the global pandemic, and the restaurant industry has been one of many to adjust their business.
Ernie s Cafe and Steakhouse, a local favorite in downtown Columbia, was not prepared to temporarily close its doors last March, but the owner knew what was coming.

“A Cook’s Tour of San Francisco” has been haunting me for over a year. On a whim, I’d bought the 1963 cookbook at a used bookstore. Flipping through its many recipes, all contributed by the trendiest restaurants of the day, I thought it would be fun to try a few. Surely, I thought, there’s something weird in here.
And there it was on page 158: Chicken Cynthia à la Champagne, a horrifying combination of chicken, mushrooms and a sauce of cooked champagne, curaçao and cream. The recipe came courtesy of Ernie’s, once one of San Francisco’s most high-toned restaurants (it is, after all, featured in the chapter called “Elegant.”) ....

Earnest Tyrone Stout

Earnest Tyrone âErnieâ Stout, 81, passed away January 13, 2021 at Brookdale Senior Living in Colonial Heights following complications due to Alzheimerâs disease. He was a remarkable man and lived a full life. If Ernie ever touched your life, you know how wonderfully kind and generous he was.
He was the son of David and Hazel Miller Stout of Johnson City and the grandson of Dewey Stout of Johnson City, who was instrumental in starting Johnson City Parks and Recreation and was elected to Johnson City Park and Recreation Hall of Fame.
Ernie grew up in Johnson City, where through his grandfather Deweyâs influence, he learned to love sports. Even though he was stricken with polio as a young boy, Ernie went on to become one of Science Hill High Schoolâs outstanding athletes in both football and track. He received the Good Sportsmanship award in track in 1957-58. He played football in Bristol in the Shrine Bowl in 1958. Later in life, Ernie was one of the ....

So it s nice when we can get a pleasant distraction in the middle of the week. Today is National Rubber Ducky Day because Ernie from Seasame Street said the toy s birthday was on January 13th. He loved the duck so much that he always had it with him when it was time for a bath.
In fact, Ernie loved it so much that he would sing about it. Do you remember Rubber ducky, you re the one. You make bath time lots of fun. Rubber ducky I m awfully fond of you.
