Is it ethical for sports fans to be back in attendance?

March 8, 2021
Fan attendance at sporting events isn’t just an issue about health, it’s an issue about ethics, especially when it comes to prioritizing. (Photo by Alina Nelson/Cronkite News)
TEMPE – Gloves are popping. Bats are cracking. And gates are opening.
Spring training baseball is back. But should it be? And, more important, should fans be able to attend the games just when the end to a global pandemic seems within reach?
These aren’t just health questions. They’re ethical ones.
“If it’s safe for baseball teams to be practicing and to travel here from all sorts of other parts of the country and set up, then why isn’t it (safe) for the symphony orchestra to be playing? Or for all the museums to be open?” said Dr. Mary Feeney, a Lincoln Professor of Ethics in Public Affairs at Arizona State University. ....

Bird Song of the Day
A city bird as you can tell from the honking car in the beginning!

#COVID19
At reader request, I’ve added these daily charts from 91-DIVOC. The data is the Johns Hopkins CSSE data. Here is the site.
I feel I’m engaging in a macabre form of tape-watching…. (A reader asked the source of the data: Johns Hopkins CSSE. DIVOC-91 does allow other data sets to be used, like Our World in Data and The Atlantic, and where they provide visualizations similar to those below, a cursory comparison shows that the shape of the curves is the same.) ....

Super Bowl and COVID Scolds: Why Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder

AP Photo/David J. Phillip
I didn’t watch the Super Bowl. Not because I have anything against it I’ve gone to my share of Super Bowl parties, and even thrown one or two of them. But, I am a “sports wife”. If my husband is into it, I’ll watch it with him. Strangely, this time around, my husband was more interested in playing with his radios (we’re Ham operators) than watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs play. So, I missed the action on the field.
However, I didn’t miss the action on Twitter. Frankly, it would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad. Our Deputy Managing Editor Jen Van Laar wrote about how Conservatives cannot enjoy cultural moments anymore, but the Left took it to a whole new level and put it on full display last night. ....

KCLU s Lance Orozco looks at COVID-19 concerns related to potential gatherings Super Bowl Sunday on the Central and South Coasts.
Ventura County is recommending restaurants, bars, distilleries, breweries and wineries keep television sets off in customer areas on Super Bowl Sunday.  The move is intended to keep the spots from becoming large group gathering places which could spread COVID-19.
Los Angeles County imposed a ban on TV use before last week s reopening of outdoor dining areas.  But, Ventura County s action doesn t go as far, just recommending that TV s be left off for the big game.
The concern is that the Super Bowl could also become the Super Spreader Bowl, fueling a new surge in cases. ....
