Plymouth County Mosquito Control accepting spray requests

Wicked Local
PLYMOUTH – The threat of mosquito-borne diseases is real with mosquito season upon us, but not everyone agrees with the use of pesticides for killing mosquitoes.
The Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project, a state agency overseen by the state Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board located at 272 South Meadow Road in Plymouth, conducts both ground and aerial spraying each year.
The main concerns in Plymouth County, according to Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project Superintendent Ross Rossetti, are West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, two rare but deadly diseases with no known cure. They belong to a group of viruses known as arbovirus that are transmitted by infected mosquitoes, ticks and insects. ....

Stockbridge Bowl out of the weeds for now, but future plans for infestations remain murky

STOCKBRIDGE — It’s clear sailing on Stockbridge Bowl — for now.
But, if the Eurasian milfoil weeds that bedeviled the state-owned, town-maintained “Great Pond” in most previous summers (excluding last year) return, the game plan to attack any infestation remains murky.
A weed-harvesting plan for limited portions of the lake this summer is “almost finalized,” Town Administrator Michael Canales told the Select Board recently. The details await approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection. And any work by the town harvesters would depend on the extent of renewed weed infestation in a potential state-permitted 10-acre section.
Responding to an Eagle query, Stockbridge Bowl Association President Richard Seltzer said the town has announced plans to seek permits from MassWildlife’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program for harvesting weeds around the full perimeter of the lake. The association’s board ex ....

There has been a breakthrough in arrangements to bring the 400-passenger MS Capt. Red to Haverhill this season.
Last Saturday, Haverhill Harbormaster Michael Vets gave preliminary approval for the installation of tie-ups for the 105-foot-long, 28-foot-wide ship at the public mooring area 100 yards downriver from the Crescent Yacht Club. While installation won’t take place until MassWildlife’s Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program signs off on any necessary sturgeon protections, Tim Slavit said he is grateful for the progress.
“I’d like to publicly thank Harbormaster Michael Vets for his professionalism for how he treated my sons and the Haverhill River Cruises. I take my hat off to him,” he said. ....

HOLYOKE The state is moving to claim ownership of the former Mount Tom quarry to stop the current owners from converting the 16-acre site into a clean-fill operation in which truckloads of soil would be dumped in the massive crater on the side of the mountain over the next 20 years.
Officials with the state Department of Conservation and Recreation are laying claim to the title for the quarry parcel under terms of the state’s 2002 purchase of 144.7 acres of the former Mount Tom Ski Area for $1.3 million. They want to see the land preserved in its natural state and protected for future use for outdoor recreation. ....
