The threats facing America’s Most Endangered Rivers® of 2021 aren’t just threats to rivers and the environment. They are threats to people – to human health, safety and survival.
On Georgia’s South River (#4), predominantly Black neighborhoods are disproportionately impacted by sewage pollution. On New Mexico’s Pecos River (#5), Indigenous and Latino communities would be some of the hardest hit by pollution from a proposed mine. And on Mississippi’s Turkey Creek (#10), flooding and poorly planned development are putting historic communities at risk.
For 36 years, the America’s Most Endangered Rivers report has sounded the alarm about rivers facing urgent threats, spotlighting critical upcoming decisions and mobilizing public action. This year’s list is so important because it highlights the interconnected challenges of en ....

New Mexico Wild statement on Pecos River being named one of the nation's most endangered

Commentary: New Mexico Wild Executive Director Mark Allison issued the following statement on the inclusion of the Pecos River in American Rivers’ annual Most Endangered Rivers report:
“The Upper Pecos River Watershed is far richer for its cultural, historical, habitat and recreational values than it is for any potential mineral development. The river’s presence on the 2021 Most Endangered Rivers report emphasizes just how critical it is that we act now to protect it before it’s too late,”
said Mark Allison, New Mexico Wild Executive Director. “The surrounding communities have fresh memories from the devastation wrought by past mining activities that polluted the river, killed tens of thousands of fish, and severely damaged the area’s outdoor recreation economy for decades. We call on New Mexico’s leaders to remember all possible threats to the long-term viability of the Pecos River as they consider a petition by local stakeholders ....

Bob Graham honored for Ocklawaha River advocacy and environmental stewardship

The group fighting a dam on the Ocklawaha River for more than 50 years is honoring former Florida Gov. and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham for his many years of efforts to restore the river flowing from near Orlando to the St. Johns River near Palatka. The dam was built as part of an ill-fated attempt to build a barge canal across the state. The Florida Defenders of the Environment, founded by legendary environmentalist Marjorie Carr, will present to Graham the Marjorie Harris Carr Award for Environmental Advocacy 50 years after canal construction was halted. ....
