A 33-year-old man from Nepal who came in search of a job in the country turned mentally ill and was rehabilitated at a centre in the city and after recovery was sent to his native country on Friday.
S. Suman of Lakshmi Bazaar in Gorkha district in Nepal along with a few others were brought to the country by a middleman for job in Kerala in 2019. However, he got separated from his team members while travelling in the train and landed in the State.
In February, 2020, he arrived at the Erode Railway Junction, with severe injuries and was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital. He was mentally ill and interaction by psychiatrists revealed that he was assaulted by the public at various places after which he boarded the train to Erode. ....

The Child Help Desk functioning at the Erode Railway Junction has rescued 56 children from October to December 2020.
Rights Education and Development Centre, a non-governmental organisation, established the desk at the junction in March 2019 to rescue and rehabilitate unaccompanied, missing, run away children in the age group of 6 to 14 and child workers in the age group of 15 to 18.
The desk functions round the clock and is manned by 12 members.
The rescued children are handed over to their parents or guardian through Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the station manager. If need arises, the children are also produced at the Child Welfare Committee for care and protection. ....

A battery-operated dual mode shunting locomotive, “Pasumai”, was inducted into service at Erode Railway Junction here on Wednesday.
General Manager of Southern Railway John Thomas flagged off the locomotive in its fleet in the presence of A. Gautam Srinivas, Divisional Railway Manger, Salem Division and other senior officials.
Officials said that the Diesel Loco Shed in Erode had converted the electric locomotive into battery-operated dual model shunting loco. The loco that was commissioned in 1985 served 35 years and was converted so that it can work on both wired and unwired section. While in wired section, the locomotive can work in both modes, while in the unwired section, it can work in battery mode. ....

An old locomotive engine was mounted on a pedestal constructed at the entrance of the Erode Railway Junction here on Tuesday.
Before the introduction of the electric locomotives, the diesel powered locomotives were widely used both for the passenger and goods trains.
Withdrawn from service
However, after the wider usage of electric locomotives, most of the diesel locomotives were withdrawn from services, while it is still being used for shunting and transporting empty rakes.
The engine displayed at the entrance of the junction was used on metre gauge and after the metre gauge was converted into broad gauge, the service of the engine was withdrawn. ....
