Onion blockage: Stakeholders urge FG to intervene

Stakeholders in the Agricultural Sector have appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the plan by the Onions Farmers Association to suspend the supply of the produce to the Southeast.
DAILY POST recalls that the National President of onion producers, Mr Aliyu Umar, had on May 30 said the association would suspend the supply of onions to the region following the deteriorating security situations in the area.
He alleged that two truckloads of the produce were recently hijacked by unknown gunmen in the region.
In an interview with NAN on Wednesday, some stakeholders in the sector lamented the outcome of the decision on both farmers and buyers in the affected region. ....

Nigerian farmers raise alarm as insecurity threatens food availability

Paul Ikonne, Executive Secretary, National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) said there was need to urgently address the insecurity challenges in the country in order to overcome challenge of food shortage.
Ikonne noted that dialogue remained critical in addressing issues of insecurity and herders, adding that a peaceful dialogue between farmers and herders would prevent future clashes.
”I believe that the herders want their cattle to be healthy so they can sell and make profit. What this means is that they also want a conducive environment to do their business.
”So, NALDA is going to engage them and the communities; we will create an avenue where they can feed their cattle so that we all can live in peace,” he said. ....

Following the alleged pump price increase of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, to N212.61, Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, at the weekend, kicked against every move to actualize that.
A template released by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, which increased petrol pump price to N212.61 per litre led to partial scarcity that has lingered for over one week with motorists still queuing at various filling stations across the country.

Millers express fear, raise alarm over massive smuggling of foreign rice

As Federal Government reopens some land borders and take-off of Africa Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA, agreement, rice millers under the auspices of Rice Millers Association of Nigeria, RIMAN, Saturday, expressed fear and raised the alarm over massive smuggling of foreign rice into the country.
The alarm was raised by the National President, RIMAN, Peter Dama, in a statement made available to Sunday Vanguard, as activities of smugglers of the commodity intensify.
According to the statement, millions of tonnes of smuggled rice is being offloaded at various entry points into the country on daily basis, which the association alleged that the Nigerian Customs has gone to sleep as the agency has failed to intercept the illegal consignments and trucking by smugglers. ....
