Vietnamese rice exports to China skyrocket

VOV.VN - China has moved to increase its import of rice from several Asian countries, including Vietnam, during the opening months of the year.
According to data given by the Chinese General Administration of Customs, the Asian giant imported a total of 910,000 tonnes of rice worth US$434.15 million over the first two months of the year, representing a sharp increase of 203.3% in volume and a rise of 180.6% in value compared to the same period from last year.
Of the total, Vietnamese rice exports to China surged by 206.3% against last year’s corresponding period.
Most notably, China s rice imports from Pakistan reached the highest level, with turnover climbing to US$127.61 million, representing an annual rise of 339.7% and accounting for 29.4% of its total rice imports. ....

Increasing global demand, stable domestic production, and better rice quality count among the reasons Vietnam can be confident its rice exports will prosper again in 2021 and surpass the 3.1 billion USD in revenue posted in 2020, despite a significant decline in the first two months of this year.

According to figures from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam earned US$192 million from shipping nearly 348,000 tonnes of rice overseas in January, down 34.2 % in value and 36.4 % in volume against December and 2.4 % and 15.4 %, respectively, year-on-year.
As the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday fell in February, the month’s export turnover is expected to be down. ....

Further, Kaul said that stalled payments from Iran have started coming and the pace of remittances has been slow. About half of the estimated stalled payments of ₹2,000 crore since 2019, have been realised, so far, he said.
AIREA sees the opening up of markets such as Argentina and Peru as a positive for the Indian rice shipments. “These are new markets in South America that are opening up for our basmati rice. Indian rice exports gained momentum this week after an additional port was opened in the country’s biggest rice-handling facility, potentially easing congestion.
Waiting periods at the Kakinada Anchorage Port had reached up to four weeks, compared with about a week normally, because of congestion at the port.
“From Saturday we have started using Kakinada deep water port,” said BV. Krishna Rao, president of the Rice Exporters Association of India, adding that this will reduce waiting time sand accelerate overall exports.
Rao said that exporters’ resulting savings in demurrage fees could be passed on to farmers and overseas buyers. ....
