Iwi plea to keep jet boats off cultural important West Coast rivers

Objective number 1 says the rules will ensure the rights, interests and values of Poutini Ngāi Tahu to natural heritage areas and features are protected, and that the ability to exercise kaitiakitanga (guardianship, care) and tino rangatiratanga (chiefly authority) are maintained and enhanced. Iwi representative Paul Madgwick said the review of rules for activities on the surface of water was a chance to rethink the use of motorboats on the West Coast. Jet boats and jet skis could be kept away from some slow-moving, spring-fed streams used for food gathering, and rivers important for cultural reasons, he said. “I don t see any need for them all to be open slather for jet boats – there are plenty of other rivers for them to get their thrills on.”

Mauri stone to rest at All Black Experience

Mauri stone to rest at All Black Experience 08 Apr 2021 13:15 PM More Related Stories Related Podcast The All Blacks have decided to park up the team’s mauri stone at the All Blacks Experience at SkyCity when they are not playing. The pounamu boulder, which was found by Gaye Tauwhare of Ngāti Waewae in the Arahura River near Hokitika, was gifted to the team by Ngāi Tahu before the 2015 Rugby World Cup campaign, and it has since accompanied the team wherever they play, at home or overseas. It was handed over yesterday by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae at a dawn ceremony in which Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei assisted.

All Blacks mauri stone arrives at its new home

· ALLBLACKS.COM · GETTY IMAGES The sacred All Blacks mauri stone has been handed over to the All Blacks Experience at SkyCity in central Auckland, where it will stay whenever the All Blacks are not playing. The All Blacks Experience team will act as kaitiaki of the precious taonga, which accompanies the All Blacks wherever they play, at home or overseas. The stone embodies the team’s mana and offers them protection in their travels and on the field.   All Blacks Experience General Manager Phil McGowan says, “The addition of the mauri stone adds another dimension to the rich cultural aspects of the Experience. Guests to the All Blacks Experience are encouraged to touch the stone. Over time the stone collects the positive thoughts and wishes of manuhiri and in this way the mauri and support of the nation is passed on to the All Blacks.”
