A 34-year-old suspected kidnapper, Sampson Ebiowei, has explained that he got his operational AK-47 rifle from a soldier of the Nigerian Army serving in the Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East who sold the weapon to him for N300,000.
Ebiowei, who hails from Ofunama in the Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, was caught by the police with the rifle as well as 88 rounds of ammunition. ....

4000 inmates released to decongest custodial facilities — Minister

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Thursday revealed that 4,000 inmates had been released so far under the Federal Government Amnesty Programme to decongest custodial centres in the country.
The minister revealed this in his address at the pulling out parade organised in honour of the Controller General of Corrections, Alhaji Ja’afaru Ahmed.
Aregbesola commended the out-going CGC for his hard work and commitment to the service, saying the CGC “epitomised service, discipline and responsibility”, adding that he had successfully transformed and impacted the service in a positive way.
Giving details of the achievements of Alhaji Ahmed, the minister said, “Currently, 23 inmates are undergoing Post Graduate Programmes comprising of one PhD; 16 Master’s Degree; and six Post Graduate Diploma Programmes. ....

Nigeria frees 4,000 inmates due to logistics

The federal government said logistics was the major reason more than 4,000 inmates were released from prisons across Nigeria.
Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, spoke on Tuesday at the inauguration of 53 operational vehicles purchased for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
He said those released benefited from the Federal Government Amnesty Programme launched in April 2020.
The minister said the exercise had gone a long way in reducing the number of inmates.

He confirmed that about 70 percent of inmates were those awaiting trial, according to NAN.
The minister said slow justice delivery was sometimes caused by lack of vehicles to convey them to court. ....

Over 4,000 inmates have gained freedom so far – Aregbesola

ABUJA – The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, said over 4,000 inmates have been freed nationwide so far under the Federal Government Amnesty Programme launched in 2020.
Aregbesola said this during the inauguration of 53 operational vehicles purchased for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) on Tuesday in Abuja.
The minister said the exercise had gone a long way in reducing the number of inmates in the service nationwide.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had granted presidential pardon to 2,600 inmates of Correctional Centres nationwide in April 2020.
NAN also reports that the pardon was said to be a continuous process in tackling overcrowding in all the Custodial Centres across the country. ....
