Unless he changes course, Masisi could be a one term President

ADAM PHETLHE ON SUNDAY
It may be too early to say so because elections are about three years away. But the tell-tale signs of being a one term President for His Excellency Dr M.E.K. Masisi are there for even the blind to see. The euphoria accompanied by the goodwill of Batswana en-route to the 2019 general election seems to have disappeared into thin air. And maybe permanently so unless and until the political compass is fundamentally redirected. I must say it without any fear of contradiction that a good chunk of well-wishers who pushed the goodwill are not your traditional Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members. They are those who are voters but not aligned to any political party. Your swing voters. If we were to conduct an approval rating exercise on the President, we could be shocked to the marrow by the outcome. Those who genuinely believed the President was more than genuine and honest during campaigning have taken a sudden, yet painful 360 degree turn against him. I ....

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Wellness Kabelo Ebineng became the latest causality in the protracted fallout between Covid-19 Presidential Task force and Performance Improvement Coordination (PIC) Force which is made up of Permanent Secretaries.
The two centres of powers in the Covid-19 fight are said to be causing division and confusion at the Government Enclave and the PIC Force feels that they have been reduced to rubber stampers of the decision of Presidential Covid-19 Task Force. ....

Corruption Perception Index shows Botswana is becoming more corrupt

1st February 2021
Having been knocked off its pedestal by Seychelles in the Corruption Perception Index, Botswana’s score in a ranking system maintained by Transparency International is also declining.
TI’s CPI for 2020 shows that Botswana has maintained second place for the third year running but that its score dropped from last year’s 61 to 60. Three remarkable things have happened. Firstly, for the third year running, Botswana has failed to score highest in the Sub-Saharan Region. Established in 1995, the CPI ranks nations on the prevalence of corruption and beginning then until 2018, Botswana has been continuously adjudged Africa’s least corrupt country. In 2018, Seychelles knocked Botswana off its pedestal and that may portend an inglorious future for Botswana. Secondly, not only is Botswana no longer Africa’s least corrupt country, its score is declining – which means that corruption is rising. The latter means that Botswana’s ranking could slip even fa ....
