Mystery court entry as both sides await outcome of Macon County sheriff legal battle

DECATUR — As all sides anxiously await a judge’s decision in the legal fight over who should be Macon County Sheriff, mystery surrounds a new written entry in the court docket.
On Monday an entry was added that reads: “The Court entered the following docket entry: Written Order entered to be filed under seal as per written order entered on July 24, 2019. Letter from the Court to Counsel sent by email this date.”
John Fogarty, the lawyer representing Republican challenger Lt. Jim Root, said Thursday he’s not aware of receiving any notifications and isn’t sure what the entry is referring to. The mention of the July, 2019 date is, he said, a reference to the filing of an earlier recount report. ....

Watch now: Legal battle to decide Macon County sheriff's race not over yet

DECATUR — The courtroom hearings to decide who should be Macon County Sheriff are over.
But the legal battle to determine whether incumbent Democratic Sheriff Tony Brown keeps his job — or must relinquish it to Republican challenger and fellow officer, Lt. Jim Root — is in some ways just beginning.
Both sides were in the Macon County Courts Facility on Thursday for a final scheduled hearing. But they agreed the last phase of the battle, including painstaking arguments over dozens of individual disputed ballots from the contested 2018 sheriff’s race, will be settled by written arguments.
And written arguments, too, will address other specific battles, such as Root’s claims there may have been some election fraud. And, in an election that had originally gone to Brown by one vote, Root is keen to press the judge to consider two extra votes in particular that were cast for him but later discovered, uncounted, in a ballot tabulating machine ....

Coal-fired power plant in southern Illinois a major obstacle to Biden's push for carbon-free electricity by 2035 |

MICHAEL HAWTHORNE
Chicago Tribune
As President Joe Biden pushes the nation toward 100% carbon-free electricity to combat climate change, a coal-fired power plant in southern Illinois is one of the biggest roadblocks.
The Prairie State Generating Station is among the top 10 industrial sources of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the United States, emitting as much as 2 million cars combined every year.
Less than a decade old, the massive electric generation plant is the brainchild of Peabody Energy, a St. Louis-based coal company that for years denied it contributes to global surges of extreme heat, wildfires, drought, flooding and rising seas.
Most of the other big U.S. coal plants still operating are at least 40 years old. They are either past or close to the end of their expected life spans. But Prairie State could keep churning out climate-changing pollution for another half century — decades past Biden’s 2035 deadline to purge fossil fu ....

Battle over two forgotten votes highlighted in the legal case over who should be Macon County sheriff

In Charleston athletic director Derrick Zerrusen s first year in the position, it has become clear to never put the cart before the horse when anticipating what the IHSA and state officials will do regarding the return of team sports in Illinois.
Part of the problem with the lost and found ballots is their strange history. The election judge who discovered them uncounted in a voting machine in Forsyth had flagged them. They were put in an envelope that ended up on now retired Macon County Clerk Stephen Bean’s desk; but Bean said they turned up there two days after the election when he found them there after returning from lunch. ....
