Coronavirus in B.C.: Latest update includes 1,462 cases, 11 deaths over the weekend

VANCOUVER
As British Columbia launched another part of its vaccine rollout plan, provincial health officials announced another 1,462 cases of the novel coronavirus had been recorded over the weekend.
The latest update, given by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry in Victoria Monday, brings the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 84,569.
Of those, 4,854 are considered to be active cases. The doctor said of the 240 people currently hospitalized with the disease, 66 are in intensive or critical care.
Nineteen of the cases confirmed over the weekend were epidemiologically linked, she said. Over the past few days there have also been 144 cases of what health officials in Canada are calling variants of concern, bringing the province s total to 394. ....

COVID-19 in B.C.: Vaccination appointments begin, positive cases among vaccinated individuals, and more

Health call centres began taking calls to make appointments for their vaccinations for people over 90 and Indigenous peoples over 65, which rose to 1.7 million calls by 10 a.m., according to B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix.
He said that as of today’s briefing, about 10,000 appointments had been booked.
Dix said there are about 80,000 eligible people in B.C. and that approximately 26,000 of them have already received their vaccinations, which he pointed out helps to alleviate numbers.
As of today, 333,327 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., and 86,925 of those are second doses. ....

B.C. reports second-highest daily total of new COVID-19 cases in 2021

Health Minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Bonnie Henry said in a joint statement that they were not yet confident enough in the recovery to ease health-order restrictions.
We are regularly reviewing the public health restrictions to assess when we can safely ease them, Dix and Henry said. We know many are keen to resume activities and we will open what we can when we have the confidence it is safe to do so.
Thankfully, there were comparatively few deaths in the past day – four, which is lower than the average in the past week.
