Located close to Changi Prison and in the Changi area where tens of thousands of Allied Prisoners-of-War (POWs) and civilians were held captive during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945, Changi Chapel and Museum (CCM) is a place to remember the experiences of those held and a site of pilgrimage for the families of those held captive. Closed for a huge revamp since 2018, CCM will reopen on 19 May 2021 with a with a refreshingly new feel, a new logo, and offer an experience that will be a lot more immersive.
The new look Changi Chapel and Museum – a huge improvement from its previous incarnation. The visitor services area, which spots a new look logo, with the CCM monogram shaped like a POW chapel. The logo is also designed to resemble prison bars. ....

Whitby Museum purchases memorial plaque to a modest man

A memorial plaque to a soldier was recently bought by his hometown museum and is today s Object of the Week.
TODAY’S object is a poignant plaque, given to the family of a First World War soldier following his death in the conflict.
Private Wilfred Harrison was just 28 when he died in the University War Hospital, Southampton in June 1917.
Memorial bronze plaques were issued after the end of the First World War to the next of kin of all British Empire service personnel who lost their lives during the conflict.
Now, Thanks to the TWV Roe Trust, Whitby Museum have purchased the bronze memorial plaque awarded to the soldier, of Cleveland Terrace, Whitby. ....

THIRTY YEARS ago yesterday, I and a lot more soldiers were streaming across various breaches in the southern Iraqi defence system at the start of the ground offensive to liberate Kuwait.
Now, with the passage of years and the release of documents, we now know that it was less about the liberation of Kuwait and her people’s and more to do with the West having “user-friendly” people in charge of oil production, but that is not what this letter is about.
So 30 years ago I was part of Dressing Station 1 Alpha, 1 Armoured Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. We had deployed to the Gulf with the rest of the 7th Armoured Brigade some four or five months earlier. ....

Readers pay tribute to popular nurse who died with coronavirus

A CUMBRIAN nurse has died with coronavirus.
The announcement made by NHS North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group said that Chris Buckingham, a nurse in the Continuing Health Care Team, had passed away with the virus.
Mr Buckingham had joined the CCG in March last year and was well known in the health and social care community.
He had worked at A&E at the Cumberland Infirmary, Keswick Community Hospital and Scarborough Hospitals after a nursing career that started in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
A statement released by the CCG said: “It is with great sadness we pay tribute to our friend and colleague Chris Buckingham who has passed away with covid.” ....

"Incredible sadness" as second Cumbrian NHS worker dies with coronavirus

A second NHS frontline worker in north Cumbria has died after contracting coronavirus.
Tributes have been paid to Chris Buckingham, a nurse in the Continuing Health Care Team, who has been described by his peers as a cheerful, hard-working and kind man .
He had joined North Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group in March last year and was well-known in the health and social care community.
The news of his death comes only a day after it was announced that Linda Parkinson, a health care assistant at the Cumberland Infirmary, had also passed away with Covid-19.
A nursing leader has spoken of his incredible sadness at losing two members of the profession. ....
