UK troops deployed to Mali as part of the UN’s peacekeeping mission have seized a cache of weapons hidden by suspected Daesh terrorists who had been threatening local communities.
The operation, which was the first of its kind by UN forces in Mali, is a clear demonstration of how British peacekeepers have been making an impact in the UN’s mission to protect civilians during their first six months in the country.
The British force launched the Mission-approved “cordon and search” operation in early May in a village close to the border with Niger, after receiving intelligence about violent extremists operating in the area. The extremists had been intimidating local communities, extorting money and assaulting people who refused to comply with their demands, meaning UK forces were able to respond to protect them under the UN’s peacekeeping mandate. ....

Norfolk soldiers have been among battalions who battled through a sand storm to seize a cache of weapons hidden by terrorists in Mali.
Around 100 soldiers from the Light Dragoons and Royal Anglian Regiment found AK47 rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, camouflage clothing, radios, mobile phones and hundreds of litres of fuel.
The mission took place in early May, shortly after suspected fighters of the so-called Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS) fled by swimming across the River Niger. ....

UK troops have battled a sandstorm to seize a cache of weapons hidden by terrorists in Mali, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Saturday.
Around 100 soldiers from the Light Dragoons and Royal Anglian Regiment found AK47 rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, camouflage clothing, radios, mobile phones, and hundreds of litres of fuel during the operation.
The mission took place in early May, shortly after suspected fighters of the so-called Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS) fled by swimming across the River Niger.

Prince Charles carried out his first public engagement since the death of his father by visiting the Welsh Guards at Combermere Barracks today.
The 72-year-old, who is Colonel of the Regiment, took the opportunity to hear first-hand about the group’s activities throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The Welsh Guardsmen were among the first to roll out COVID-19 testing in the UK and combined with the Royal Anglian Regiment and the Grenadier Guards to set up the first mobile testing units back in March 2020.
Three months later the regiment performed a birthday tribute for the Queen at Windsor Castle incorporating innovative drill moves. ....
