On March 23, the Arakan Army (AA) an ethnic armed organization (EAO) based largely in Myanmar’s Rakhine State finally released a statement condemning the military’s seizure of power in the February 1 coup. AA spokesperson, Khine Thu Kha, said that the AA was “together…with the people” and would “continue to go forward for the oppressed Rakhine people” (Dhaka Star, March 23).
Up until this point, the AA had held back from issuing any kind of response to the coup, despite an increasing number of EAOs having already declared their support for the civil disobedience movement (CDM). Shortly after Myanmar s military coup on Feb 1, a boat packed with Rohingya refugees left Bangladesh. Ten days later, the refugee agency UNHCR reported that the vessel was adrift in the Andaman Sea. It appealed to maritime authorities to provide swift assistance. In late February the vessel was found in Indian waters. Of the 81 people on board, eight had died. A diplomatic spat between India and Bangladesh followed. Neither country wanted to take responsibility for the group. ....

Sittwe, Rakhine State A lawmaker from the Arakan National Party (ANP) submitted a proposal to the Rakhine State parliament on Monday, urging for the Arakan Army (AA) and its political wing, the United League of Arakan (ULA), to no longer be regarded as terrorist groups.
“If permanent peace is to be built, the terrorist label must be removed as it poses obstacles to the peace process,” said U Tun Tha Sein, who put forward the proposal. ....
