The law, passed in the parliament the day before, gives citizenship to undocumented, non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Assam erupted in violent protests as many saw the law as a violation of the 1985 Assam Accord, which committed the central government to removing all “illegal immigrants” who entered the state after March 24, 1971.
