Volta Energy Technologies raises over $90M of a targeted $150M fund to back energy storage startups – TechCrunch

Volta Energy Technologies raises over $90M of a targeted $150M fund to back energy storage startups
Volta Energy Technologies, the energy investment and advisory services firm backed by some of the biggest names in energy and energy storage materials, has closed on nearly $90 million of a targeted $150 million investment fund, according to people familiar with the group’s plans.
The venture investment vehicle complements a $180 million existing commitment from Volta’s four corporate backers Equinor, Albermarle, Exelon and Hanon Systems and comes at a time when interest in energy storage technologies couldn’t be stronger.
As the transition away from internal combustion engines and hydrocarbon fuels begins in earnest, companies are scrambling to drive down costs and improve performance of battery technologies that will be necessary to power millions of electric cars and store massive amounts of renewable energy that still needs to be developed. ....

Additional $47M to 7 ARPA-E SCALEUP projects; $27M to 3 advanced battery projects for EVs and electric aviation
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding an additional $47 million in funding for seven projects as part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy’s (ARPA-E) Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program. Three of the projects (Sila, 24M and Ionic Materials) are scaling up advanced battery technologies for EVs and aviation, and account for $27 million of the $47 million tranche.
These selections bring total SCALEUP program funding to over $70 million, building on $24 million in previously announced SCALEUP “Fast Track” selections. (Earlier post.) These new SCALEUP teams are receiving funding to support the scaling of high-risk and potentially disruptive new electric vehicle battery, data center efficiency, grid modernization, emissions mitigation, and storage technologies. ....

QuantumScape’s Solid-State Battery Could be the Breakthrough EVs Need – But it’s in a Race to be First
New tech may address energy density, charging, cost and other issues.
QuantumScape appears to be closing in on mass producing solid-state batteries for cars.
While lithium-ion batteries have improved significantly since the technology went into automotive production a decade ago, they still fall short of what some experts believe will be needed to make electric propulsion truly competitive with the internal combustion engine, at least until a true breakthrough comes along.
Now, however, decade-old research company QuantumScape finds itself in the spotlight as it rolls out a new technology that could substantially boost power – and range – enough to make battery-drive systems viable not only for automobiles but also for aircraft. Its claims have won over the backing of Volkswagen AG, the German automaker planning to invest nearly $90 ....
