+ Ghana’s Parliament has announced its programmes leading to the dissolution of its seventh session to pave way for the inauguration of the eighth session on Thursday, January 7, 2021. The line up of activities also covers the inauguration and swearing-in of President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the same day. A statement released by the Public Affairs Directorate of the house indicated that attendance to any of the programmes will strictly be by invitation due to COVID-19. The statement signed by Parliament’s Director of Public Affairs, Madam Kate Addo disclosed that President Akufo-Addo will be delivering the final State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, January 5, at 10 am to the House. ....
We regret incidents of night of inauguration -Parliament The leadership of Parliament has expressed regret about incidents which characterised the inauguration of the 8th Parliament last Thursday. It would be recalled that the inauguration of the 8th Parliament was met with brawls, agitations, attacks, and even the stealing of a ballot box from some members yet to be sworn in. This act actually prolonged the time set aside for the inauguration and also the swearing in of the President-elect at the time, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Kate Addo, she indicated that most of the actions during the night were regrettable, but Parliament would like to put them behind it and work towards a more focused and unified membership aimed at promoting best parliamentary practices and good governance. ....
The move is in pursuant with Article 67 of the 1992 constitution which states that “the President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before a dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.” The Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament in a statement said the event is scheduled for 10:00 am. It will, however, be strictly by invitation due to COVID-19.
