Government of Canada launches consultation on federal policy definition of senior abuse

TORONTO, June 15, 2021 /CNW/ - Seniors are too often victims of not only physical and sexual abuse, but also neglect, psychological or financial abuse, often perpetrated by a person in a position of trust. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerabated these harms by further isolating many seniors. Yet there is no one accepted definition of senior abuse in Canada or around the world, hampering collaboration, data collection and progress against this scourge.
Today, at an event organized by CanAge, Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario and the Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Minister of Seniors, Deb Schulte, announced the launch of consultations with experts, stakeholders and Canadians on a definition of senior abuse. On April 19, the Canadian government released its first budget in two years; a 725-page document with $101 billion in new spending. Federal Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte explains how the budget helps out seniors and gives her reactions, while Laura Tamblyn Watts, the CEO of CanAge, a national seniors’ advocacy organization working to improve the lives of older adults through advocacy, policy and community engagement, also reacts and gives her assessment of the budget, both the pros and cons and how it impacts seniors in Canada.

Variyan, a local Saskatchewanian and Carleton University graduate, previously served as Minister Seamus O’Regan’s director of communications as well as his deputy chief of staff in the office of Natural Resources. Variyan previously worked for Ralph Goodale when he served as minister of public safety and emergency preparedness.
