Budget 2021: Recovery remains out of sight

The last time I sat in the B.C. legislature listening to a finance minister deliver the budget, we were living in a very different world. Over the past year, we have watched our world change and anxiety grow due to daily uncertainty, separation from friends and loved ones, our small businesses holding on by a thread, and wondering what the future will look like.
On Tuesday, as I prepared to hear Finance Minister Selina Robinson deliver the first budget of this government’s second term in office, I was waiting eagerly to hear the NDP offer a real vision and a clear plan for economic recovery that acknowledged the realities of this new world. I, like so many British Columbians, was waiting for this government to demonstrate through Budget 2021 that there was reason to hope, reason to feel a sense of relief, and reason to trust this government to lead us into a brighter future. ....

B.C. budget lacks innovative drive, vision during uncertain times, say experts

Finance Minister Selina Robinson said Tuesday her budget sets out to spend $8.7 billion over three years on infrastructure and supports for families and businesses to build economic recovery from COVID-19.
She forecast a $9.7-billion deficit and the total provincial debt is expected to increase to almost $103 billion from $87.4 billion in the last budget.
Robinson said the budget forecasts three consecutive multibillion-dollar deficits and estimates it will take between seven and nine years for the province to return to balanced budgets. ....
