Experts recommend harmonising MedTech industry regulations, standards

Health and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing & Medical Devices Committee, PHDCCI in association with Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers, Govt of India recently organised the fourth series of Self Sufficiency in Medical Technology on Optimum Regulations, Quality Standards, Controls for MedTech on March 12, 2021.
The webinar was graced with the presence of Dr N Subramanian, Chair, Health Committee, PHDCCI & Director, Medical Services, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Dr Sameer Gupta, Co-Chair, Health Committee, PHDCCI & Dr Harvinder Popli, Director, Delhi Pharmaceutical Science & Research University.
The state-run Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) and Indian Oil Corpration Limited (IOCL) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a plastic park in Paradip, officials said. As per the MoU, Indian Oil announced a special strategic incentive scheme to attract investments in downstream polymer industries at Paradip Plastic Park. An incentive of Rs 2000 for each metric tonne of polypropylene granules from Paradip Refinery shall be offered to the manufacturing units located in the Paradip Plastic Park till March 31, 2030. Around 26 units are expected to come up at the plastic park with an estimated investment of Rs 500 crore and it is likely to generate 6,000 direct and indirect employment.

Speaking on the occasion Shri DV Sadananda Gowda commended India’s capabilities as a global and reliable supplier of drugs and medical devices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Citing the recent UNCTAD report, he also pointed out India’s positive FDI growth even with a decline in FDI of 42% globally. Shri Gowda said, “As the pandemic exposed the global vulnerabilities of the supply chains in the pharmaceuticals sector, the Department of Pharmaceuticals launched the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for bulk drugs, with a financial outlay of ₹6,940 crores across 53 APIs over 6 years. For Medical Devices, another PLI scheme was announced with an outlay of ₹3,420. Such interventions & incentives have played an instrumental role in realizing Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, or India for the world.”
