Italy sets up COVID victims day - English


(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 17 - Italy on Wednesday set up a COVID victims remembrance day on March 18 each year, according to a bill approved by a Senate panel.
    The bill was unanimously approved by the constitutional affairs committee in the upper house in a process that bypasses approval by the sitting parliament.
    March 18 was the day Italy saw its total death toll reach almost 3,000 and images of army trucks taking coffins away from full cemeteries in the Lombardy city of Bergamo hit the headlines amid a raging epidemic in the north of the country last year.
    The day is mean to preserve and renew the memory of all the people who died because of he epidemic , according to the bill. ....

Myanmar s coup-installed regime has imposed martial law in two more densely populated Yangon townships on Monday, a day after security forces gunned down nearly 40 protesters demanding the restoration of civilian rule.
The National Administrative Council, led by the military chief and Feb.1 coup leader Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, has been escalating the violence to quell the anti-coup demonstration.
It imposed martial law in Hlaing Thar Yar and Shwe Pyi Thar, two industrial cities in the former capital Yangon, on Sunday, following the violence in which almost 40 people were killed and several others injured. Sunday s violence has brought the total death tolls to more than 110 since the Feb. 1 military coup. ....
