Push for Massive Voting Rights Legislation Stumbles in the Senate Democrats are forced to consider destroying the filibuster in order to pass “the most sweeping elections overhaul in generations,” according to a report in The New York Times. Shani Saxon Jun 1, 2021 2:25PM ET If the legislation passes, Democrats could overrule the states and create national mandates that they establish “automatic voter registration, hold regular no-excuse early and mail-in voting,” according to The Times. Photo Credit: @sian w via Twenty20 Political pressure is building on Senate Democrats to take action as Republican-led states across the country continue to pass voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact low-income communities of color. Democrats, however, have failed to unite over a strategy to overcome Senate opposition to the For the People Act, or Senate Bill 1, “the most sweeping elections overhaul in generations,” ....

(Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images). As lawmakers debate proposed changes to Ohio’s election system, the Secretary of State’s Office is planning ahead on ensuring future election results are accurate. County boards of elections conduct General Election audits in midterm and presidential years, in accordance with state law. The results announced on election night are “unofficial” until they are officially certified by elections workers. The audits help to make sure Ohio reports the correct winners through comparing a sample of paper ballots with the results produced by tabulation machine. ....
Failure to abide by the Help America Vote Act “deprived every single U.S. citizen … in the 2020 election,” the suits claim. It demands that the federal courts take over the government until a new Congress The Help America Vote Act was enacted to address allegations of “fraud in the 2000” election. It set forth minimum requirements that the lawsuit claims weren’t upheld during the 2020 elections. The requirements stipulate duties regarding mail-in ballots, registration of voters by mail, highly detailed voter identification processes and others that the lawsuit claims weren’t met. According to the original complaint, federal and state officials engaged in “selective enforcement” to fraudulently certify the election as valid. They failed to meet these requirements using “unlawful states rights claims,” the original suit claims. ....
Here’s my philosophy, I think the reasons the GOP did so much better than expected in 2020 that Republicans said the hell with covid and did a lot of voter contact, including canvassing, that got more people to the polls than Democrat’s remote contact did. Also, I was very disappointed that I spent a lot of my life savings donating to Cal Cunningham, Sarah whoever in Maine, Jaime Harrison, the woman in Texas, as did a lot of other Democrats, and got squat for it. I don’t want my money going to know-it-all-consultants to spend on their friends’ businesses. The wins in Georgia and Arizona were partly due to good old shoe leather door knocking, voter level, contacts. So I’m trying to cut out the middleman wherever I can. ....
The bitter Capitol fight over Republican efforts to toughen voter fraud laws has cast a brighter spotlight on Crystal Mason, a Tarrant County woman who was sentenced to five years in prison for illegally casting a ballot that wasn t even counted in 2016. Democrats and civil rights groups have embraced Mason s case as a cautionary tale on overcriminalizing election matters, and state Rep. John Bucy III, D-Austin, successfully amended a major GOP voting measure by invoking her name during a recent late-night House debate. The added attention comes at a critical time for Mason. The state s highest criminal court is reviewing her conviction to determine if the state law on illegal voting was misapplied in her case. A ruling by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is still months away, but the court s nine Republican judges are Mason s last hope of avoiding prison (her sentence has been delayed by her appeal). ....
