When helping my daughter with her AP World History class recently, I was struck by the similarities between the present day and the troubled years between the first and second world wars. This similarity was driven home even more strongly by the recent death of Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s spouse of almost 74 years. Philip’s passing reminds us that we will eventually lose Elizabeth herself, who, at 94, is the longest-reigning monarch in British (and world) history.
We are witnessing the end of an era.
The aftermath of the Great War saw the implosion of three European kingdoms: the German-Prussian Empire, the Habsburg dynasty that ruled Austria-Hungary and the 300-year-old Romanov dynasty in Russia.
In these dire times, many are looking to the church to offer hope, but true hope and peace only come through conviction of sin and deep repentance. This is how we will truly change our nation. We canât make bad people good; only God can do that.Â

The term âAchillesâ heelâ refers to an area of weakness and vulnerability. The American church today has an Achillesâ heelâa lack of prayer and powerful preaching. Both are vitally important to spiritual health. Sadly, many Christian leaders focus on image rather than intimacy with Christ, being woke instead of waking up from their spiritual slumber, not wanting to offend the world instead of not wanting to offend God.Â
Upright: âDespite the talk of a âforever war,â US troops in Afghanistan areÂ
not embroiled in warfare. The last American combat death occurred well over a year ago. Only about 3,500 US military personnel are deployed to Afghanistan, and they are involved primarily in training and logistics. Removing those forces will gain America very little. But it will immeasurably benefit the Taliban, who will exult, with reason, at having driven out the Americans.â âJeff Jacoby
Re: The Left: âThe catastrophe now unfolding at our border is a direct result of progressive policies and pronouncements emanating from Democrats in Washington. But Democrats can end this disaster just as quickly as they caused it. All they have to do is reinstate commonsense border enforcement and stop treating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol as a concierge service for illegal aliens.â âMike Pence
