Democrats in the General Assembly unveiled their plan Tuesday to reshape the state’s Supreme Court districts Tuesday, hours ahead of their first public hearing on proposed legislative maps released earlier.
“This map is about equal representation in the state’s most important court,” state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, chair of the House Redistricting Committee, said in a statement. “As we strive for all to be equal before the law, we must ensure we all have an equal voice in choosing those who uphold it.”
Democrats say populations shifts over the past ten years have caused large fluctuations among the existing court districts.

Illinois House Republicans on Monday blasted Democrats for the “lowest of lows” in their release of new legislative maps, accusing the majority party of trying to “ramrod” the proposed redrawn boundaries through the General Assembly just a week before it’s scheduled to adjourn.
The Republican legislators called on Gov. J.B. Pritzker to veto the maps if the Legislature passes them.
“[The Democrats] scheduled four public hearings this week, two of which are on the same day, in an attempt to ramrod these maps through the General Assembly before May 31,” said House Republican Leader Jim Durkin.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Democratic legislators have released proposed maps for the
Illinois 118 House and 59 Senate districts that they said ensure the broad racial and geographic diversity of Illinois is reflected in the General Assembly, but that Republicans called partisan. Redistricting is about making sure all voices are heard, and that s exactly what this map accomplishes, state Sen. Omar Aquino, a
Chicago Democrat, said in a statement accompanying the release Friday evening. Aquino is chair of the Senate s redistricting committee. This is a fair map that reflects the great diversity of our state and ensures every person receives equal representation in the General Assembly.

The greatest poet of European colonialism was of course Rudyard Kipling. One of his best efforts, first published in 1899, was addressed to the people of the U.S.A., exhorting us to colonize the Philippines, which we had acquired in the Spanish-American War. The title of that poem was The White Man s Burden.
A listener begged to differ.
Mr. Derbyshire: Kipling s The White Man s Burden enumerates all the problems the U.S. would face if it took the Philippines. It is
against the U.S. becoming an empire. Several verses were read in the Senate as arguments against the ratification of the Treaty of Paris. The lefties at Wikipedia agree with you however.
