Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) s Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud has announced the selection of four Northeast Ohio-based artists as 2020/2021 Premiere Fellows, made possible by dedicated funding from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC).
The purpose of the Premiere Fellowship is to celebrate, reward, and support artists who have demonstrated excellence in and are committed to new play development. CPT defines excellence as artists creating transformative and impactful experiences for their intended communities. The award is for theatre artists from multiple disciplines, including acting, directing, choreography, scriptwriting, devising playwrighting, design, and stage management. Fellows receive a financial award, plus additional fees for projects, professional development, and access to space, equipment ....

We’re pleased to announce the 2021 WWB Poems in Translation Contest spotlighting groundbreaking work by poets and translators around the world.
The contest is open to submissions of contemporary international poetry translated from other languages into English. Four winning poems will be co-published in Words Without Borders and Poem-a-Day, the popular daily poetry series produced by the Academy of American Poets, throughout September, which is National Translation Month. Black History Month honors Black Americans and their contributions every February. Presidents’ Day is the official observance of George Washington s birthday on the third Monday of February. One story combines them.
In February 1776, Gen. George Washington read a “letter and poem addressed to me by Mrs. or Miss Phillis Wheatley at his camp in Cambridge, Mass. Despite coming to Boston as a child and being sold into slavery in 1761, by this time Wheatley had become the first published African American. A wealthy British patron in England had published her poetry in 1773 in a book called “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral.” ....

However, when young Amanda Gorman took to the microphone to read the poem called The Hill We Climb, the raised eyebrows turned to inquisitive glances who is she? That lady in yellow coat, red headband and statement hoop earrings.
The 22-year-old is America s first National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman became the youngest poet ever to deliver a poem recitation for the US President at the inaugural ceremony. The post inauguration press coverage for a change threw some spotlight on the right talent. ....
