“Smug Hudson Hawk looks like a turkey,” said the Chicago Tribune on May 24, 1991 – the day that Hudson Hawk opened in the US. Bruce Willis’s comedy caper had been in the firing line since long before it hit cinemas. The accusation of turkey-faced smuggery was fuelled by months’ worth of damning set reports: constant rewrites as the film was shot; the leading lady being mysterious recast; Bruce Willis and producer Joel Silver – pumped up from the Die Hard 2 box office – ganging up on the director Michael Lehmann; and a budget which ballooned to a hefty $65 million – or up to $75 million according to some reports.

For a time, CIA analyst-turned-man-of-action Jack Ryan looked like the perfect role for actors looking to flex their leading-man muscles. Playing Ryan requires a performer commanding enough to plausibly interact with movie presidents; restrained enough to assume an action hero’s faux humility; and confident enough to accept easy replacement when the job inevitably fails to work out. It’s the part that everyone wants and almost no one is willing to keep.
Ryan is the most famous character created by the late novelist Tom Clancy, in part because he has appeared in blockbuster movie adaptations and has been brought to life by the likes of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. It’s easy to imagine Clancy satisfied with this arrangement, given his admiration for actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan. Yet somehow, this steady stream of star-powered, big-budget thrillers has failed to produce a viable long-running film series for long-time distributor Paramount.

Last month No Time To Die’s release date was pushed back again. This time the film moved from April 2, 2021 to October 8, 2021. The film will showcase the end of Craig’s version of the James Bond story. The actor has played 007 for 15 years after kicking off his journey in 2006’s Casino Royale. The next star to take on the iconic role has not been announced, but all eyes have been on British actors including Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston and Regé-Jean Page.
