LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The City of La Crosse might form its 8th sister city through a partnership with Luxembourg city Junglinster. The International Committee needs to pass the sister city status at Monday night s council meeting and then it moves on to the City of La Crosse Common Council and Mayor Mitch Reynolds for final approval. Luxembourg American Cultural Society members said adding Junglinster honors history, the future and several dual citizens who live in La Crosse. Member James Birnbaum said it would increase travel between the two cities and that the idea came from an unlikely source high school students. ....

A Kwanzaa celebration reinforcing the seven principles, or the Nguzo Saba, was held Dec. 29 by the Cultural Committee of the African-American Cultural Society. It reached many that filled the seats â a marketplace for vendors â and through cultural entertainment, acknowledged our African heritage. The celebration resonated another annual Kwanzaa at the African American Cultural Society, emanating since 1991. Dr. Maulana Karenga of the Black Studies Department of California State College, Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966. Kwanzaa is defined as âFirst Fruits of the Harvest.â ....
I listened to clips from Martin Luther King s “I Have a Dream” speech with African-American Cultural Society President Joseph Matthews for the Jan. 15 edition of “Free for All Friday,” on WNZF. Here are three things I learned. First, despite many social advances, one statistic provides alarming evidence that there is a great deal more progress needed to give future generations greater opportunity: In 1968, unmarried women were the main breadwinners for 20% of [black] households, University of Florida professor Sharon Austin reported. In recent years, the percentage has risen as high as 72%. King said, in his immortal speech in 1963, that the freedom of whites is inextricably bound to the freedom of blacks. I believe that the same can be said about the health of our communities: If black families are in poverty, we are an impoverished community. ....
