Henry’s wife, Maggie, discovers that her owner and biological father, Colonel Stephen Franks, has arranged to sell her, partly because his wife has become too close to Maggie and partly because Maggie has refused his sexual advances. Returning from an errand for the Franks family, Henry learns that his wife has been sold away from the Franks plantation. Maggie’s parents, Daddy Joe and Mammy Judy, weep, pray for better times, and implore Henry to “stan’ still an see de salbation.” Henry, however, chooses instead to leave the Franks plantation and travel through each state of the antebellum South in order to “sow the seeds” of rebellion. ....

Sengbe Pieh, a farmer and trader from Sierra Leone was taken into slavery in 1839. During the voyage to the so-called New World, he led a mutiny aboard the Amistad which would later galvanize the abolitionist movement.

Where was Sengbe Pieh born?
The exact date of Sengbe Pieh s birth is unknown but many historians place his year of birth around 1814 in present day Sierra Leone. It is believed that he was born on the southern Island district of Bonthe which is renowned for fishing and farming. Pieh would later become a rice farmer. At the time of his capture, Pieh is said to have been married and that he had a son and two daughters. ....

In 2000, I bought my first home without the help of a husband. I spent every penny I had on the down payment, moving expenses, purchasing appliances and on connecting the utilities. I was really proud of this accomplishment. Shortly thereafter, my two daughters, Nuola and Moremi, and I came home one evening to find a bare fridge and a dark house.
“Oh, God,” I murmured. “What am I to do?”
I was embarrassed to ask my sisters for help. They all have their children and, even, grandchildren for whom to care. I left Nuola and Moremi home, and mindlessly drove five minutes to my mother’s home. We sat on the porch and sipped hot tea while the breeze cooled us off, chatted about the children, then went inside to watch her favorite television program, “Jeopardy.” I finally got up to leave. I never mentioned the purpose of my visit. ....
