Federal Militarization of Law Enforcement Must End The federal government arms local police forces in the United States with weapons of war. A program called “1033,” for the section of the act that created it, allows the Department of Defense to give state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies military hardware. Since its inception in 1996, nearly 10,000 jurisdictions have received more than $7 billion of equipment. This includes combat vehicles, rifles, military helmets, and misleadingly named “non-” or less-lethal weapons, some of which have featured in police raids and police violence against protesters, including recent protests for racial justice. In what can be described as a significant blow to the Western Cape drug trade, members of Operation Lockdown II executed an intelligence-driven intervention and raided a Kraaifontein residence last night. The residence, which is also utilized as a karate studio was equipped with paraphernalia to cultivate and produce an inventory of cannabis products, estimated at a substantial amount. The calculation of the exact street value of the dagga is delayed by the extensive variety and quantities, comprising dagga plants, dagga cookies, muffins, and milkshakes, to name but a few. Besides the dagga, an amount of R35 000-00 believed to be the proceeds of crime has been confiscated together with 25 small calibre rounds of ammunition for which no license could be produced. A 39-year-old member attached to the Tactical Response Team was arrested during the weekend on suspicion of the proliferation of information to unsavory characters operating in the Western Cape underworld. It is reported that the suspect was arrested during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the National Task Team investigating gang-related activities, National Intervention Unit, and Tactical Response Team. It’s alleged that the suspect has between 2019 and 2020, enticed by an underworld figure to infiltrate the Anti-Gang Unit and supply them with information relating to operations of the underworld figure in return for gratification. The suspect will be charged with corruption together with three accomplices. The four will be appearing in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 04 May 2021. ....
Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said its operatives seized illicit drugs worth N80 billion in the past three months. Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Brig Gen Buba Marwa (rtd) said this when the acting Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, visited him at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. Marwa, who reached 100 days in office on Wednesday, said over two million kilogrammes of various illicit drugs have been seized by the Agency within the period. He said 2,100 persons were arrested and 350 convictions have been secured. He said the IGP’s visit was timely, calling for renewed collaboration between the Agency and police, especially as the use of drugs is the major reason for to criminal activities in Nigeria. ....
