In this artistic illustration, a user with an NTRAIN implant and its accompanying external hub works in the field. The user inputs a desired time shift (due to shift work or travel across time zones). Based on cues from the body’s physiology, the external hub detects the user’s circadian rhythm, and triggers the implant to produce precisely-dosed peptide therapies.
Abstract:
•Device will harness the same peptides the body makes to regulate sleep cycles ....

Chemical company challenges Florida on pesticide denial

A South Carolina-based pesticide manufacturer is appealing a Florida agency’s denial to use a chemical to combat citrus greening.
AgLogic Chemical filed May 11 for an administrative hearing with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services claiming the application to use the pesticide aldicarb was denied in an “erroneous manner.”
“The Department’s denial threatens to deprive the beleaguered Florida citrus industry of an important tool to fight the most devastating pest in its storied history,” the filing says.
Citrus greening affects groves by causing tree decline due to bacteria believed to be transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid, according to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences website. ....

Arizona farmers' GMO cotton targets pests, eliminates pink bollworm

View Comments
CASA GRANDE Dust from a nearby tractor blew thick across Paco Ollerton s face as he walked across a wide field sprinkled with leftover cotton from last fall s harvest. The tractor roared along his farm, tilling the soil to prepare for the next planting.
The cotton seeds Ollerton would plant were bright blue and shimmery, like tiny jewels in his hand. These seeds had been color-coded to signify that they were genetically modified.
Cotton farmers in Arizona started planting genetically modified cotton in 1996 in an effort to eradicate an invasive species of moth from Asia or Austrailia known as the pink bollworm. Pink bollworm caterpillars eat the seeds of cotton plants and damage cotton fibers, and in the 1990s and early 2000s, they were a big problem in Arizona. ....

Surging prices signal recovery for Delaware's fishing industry

Delaware News Journal
On a recent sunny afternoon in April, groups of people sat on the edge of the dock at Anglers Marina in Lewes, where large charter and fishing boats loomed on blocks behind them.
The captains, crew members and other anglers at the marina are preparing for an expected busy spring and summer after the COVID-19 pandemic spurred activity in some parts of the industry, while slowing and suspending it in others.
In reaction to significant revenue loss among some fishery-related businesses, Delaware is now funneling federal CARES Act money toward the industry. It comes at a time when many fisheries throughout Delmarva and the nation have faced pressures due to the pandemic, seeking support from federal and municipal governments. ....
