Earth Day Celebration Egg Hunt and Trash Pick Up
Des Moines, Water Works Park The Water Works Park Foundation in conjunction with the Great Outdoors Foundation and Des Moines Water Works announced today that the eggs will be back in the park on Saturday, April 24th. The event will take place between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.
Initially introduced on Earth Day weekend in 2018, the egg hunt has become a favorite of park goers. “We add some new wrinkles each year,” stated Amy Jennings, Foundation Board President. “This year we are wrapping our activities around the theme CARE…for instance, Care about the environment. Care about your health. Care about water quality. Care about public art. Our partners are helping us underscore that message with several activities to underscore the theme.” ....

Mt. Vernon to Receive $50,000 Community Betterment Grant for Topping Cold Turkey Challenge

DES MOINES, Iowa, March 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Back in November 2020, Above + Beyond Cancer announced a nicotine-cessation contest, called the Cold Turkey Challenge, which offered a $50,000 community betterment grant for an Iowa small town that could gather a group of tobacco users in their community and work with them to stop using nicotine during an eight-week contest.

The Cold Turkey Challenge was open to all Iowa communities with populations of 5,000 or fewer. The eight-week contest officially kicked off January 1, 2021 and ends today, February 26, 2021. It was created to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the release of the 1971 Norman Lear movie, Cold Turkey, which was filmed in Iowa. It was the brainchild of long-time Iowan Doug Reichardt, and the Reichardt Family Foundation, in conjunction with Dr. Richard Deming, the Founder of Above + Beyond Cancer. DES MOINES, Iowa When life hands you a foot of a snow, walk all over it. 
Cancer support group Above and Beyond Cancer saw this week s snowfall as an opportunity to appreciate the beauty that comes from a storm. They hosted a snowshoeing adventure Wednesday through Water Works Park in Des Moines.
Program director Mary Van Heukelom encourages cancer survivors to get out and be active.
I think snowshoeing is great because it s so unique. It s so original, Van  Heukelom said. Different feeling from other things, and every snowfall is a little bit different. ....
