Naperville to consider offering grants to utility customers behind on payments

Naperville residents and business owners struggling to pay their utility bills during the COVID-19 crisis could soon be offered some financial relief.
The city council on Tuesday is set to consider establishing a temporary assistance program that would provide one-time grants to residential and commercial utility customers, particularly those who are behind on their payments.
Naperville saw a sharp rise in the number of overdue water and electric bills last year, which Finance Director Rachel Mayer says can be largely attributed to the economic hardships of the pandemic.

Loaves & Fishes Community Services has acquired an Aurora warehouse that will help the nonprofit revamp its strategy for delivering food and services.
The new 30,000-square-foot facility at 580 Exchange Court will serve as the organization s central hub, where food products will be received, stored, processed and distributed to what leaders are calling the spokes, CEO Mike Havala said. A Naperville-based company s virtual event Wednesday is doubling as a fundraiser for Loaves & Fishes Community Services, which organization leaders say has seen a dramatic increase in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.
REFUEL was launched about four years ago to bring inspiration to Dealer Inspire employees with a lineup of celebrity guest speakers, CEO Joe Chura said. To fill the event s usual venue Naperville s Yellow Box he decided to sell the remaining tickets to the public and donate all proceeds to Loaves & Fishes.
Though this year s event is free and online, REFUEL is still accepting donations to benefit the hunger relief agency, he said, with Dealer Inspire s parent company and event sponsor, Cars.com, pledging a matching contribution of up to $25,000.
