Jul 21, 2021 Massive Turnout for Vaccination in Orange Walk The Ministry of Health and Wellness is carrying out a national vaccination campaign, which today took them to Orange Walk District where hundreds of residents came out get vaccinated. Scores of persons were getting either their first or second jab. This is promising as the country tries to get enough people vaccinated so that economic activity can fully rebound. Duane Moody, Reporting There were snaking lines outside the school grounds in San Pablo Village in the Orange Walk District as the institution was transformed into a vaccination centre today. Hundreds of residents, as well as villagers from neighbouring San Jose, came out to get their jab of the COVID-19 vaccine. Jul 13, 2021 Fertilizer Prices Increasing And what about other locally produced commodities? Will prices go up? This is a real concern in the agriculture industry. At the last House Meeting, Corozal North area rep Hugo Patt expressed concerns about the cost of fertilizers and what it would mean for the cost of production in the agricultural sector. Today, Agriculture Minister says those concerns are valid. He says that while he hasn’t seen the increase at the store where he purchases fertilizers, he has received credible reports from importers that the prices may double and combined with the increasing cost of freight. Mai says that can mean a cost of production for farmers and ultimately an increase in consumer prices. ....
Jul 6, 2021 Farmers Get Assistance in the Valley of Peace Over the past two years, flooding and drought have ravaged vegetable fields in the Valley of Peace. Less than a year ago, the country’s largest cabbage producers lost hundreds of thousands of heads of cabbage to floods leaving them struggling to make ends meet. At the time, the Valley of Peace Farmers Association appealed to the government for help for them to keep planting. Well, G.O.B. is now offering assistance to thirty-one farmers through the Resilient Rural Belize Program’s Matching Grant Fund. On Monday, government officials and the Valley of Peace farmers signed an agreement for the construction of a climate resilient office and climate smart seedling nursery, packing and storage center with equipment and irrigation equipment. The agreement also provides for technical assistance and capacity building to help them improve the management and marketing of their operations. ....
Jul 1, 2021 Shipyard Now Certified to Export Cattle to Mexico The formal exportation of cattle to the Mexican market was further realised today when the process of transporting hundreds of head of cattle to that neighbouring country began. The Mexican government is now accepting livestock from Shipyard, which will now serve as a hub for its exportation. It’s an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture to penetrate and expand the market opportunities for livestock cattle producers in Belize.
