Many garment factories that disbursed wages to workers digitally at the height of the pandemic in Bangladesh are gradually returning to cash payments although electronic transfers provide a lot of benefits, said speakers yesterday.   
Before the pandemic, 4 lakh workers from 300 factories used to receive salaries through bKash, the largest mobile financial service (MFS) in the country. 
The number of workers getting payment digitally rose to 11 lakh after the government imposed a lockdown in March last year to slow the spread of the rogue virus in the country. ....

DHAKA, Mar 10, 2021 (BSS) – Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun today underscored the need for developing more skilled workers to survive in the competitive market across the world.
“While everyone around the world was terrified by the corona epidemic, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we were able to keep the country’s economy afloat by tackling the corona epidemic. In order to survive in the competitive market, we need to create skilled manpower,” he said.
The minister said this while inaugurating the ‘Bangabandhu Corner’ at the Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Center (BITAC) in the city, said a press release. ....

The upcoming industrial policy will set a target to increase the industrial sector s economic contribution from the existing 35 per cent to 40 per cent of the country s gross domestic product, according to a draft industrial policy.
The new policy is expected to focus on the IT sector in order to help industries improve their efficiency and productivity, it said. ....

There is huge potential in the country s light engineering sector to exploit the local market for motorcycle components, according to speakers at a webinar yesterday.
The annual demand for motorcycles reached 550,574 units on average in 2019 while it was 207,835 units in 2015, for which around Tk 2,100 crore worth of spare parts is required, said Ihsanul Karim, director of Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (Bitac). ....
