Trio breaks into an eatery, wipes it clean Trio breaks into an eatery, wipes it clean ByBellie ThomasBellie Thomas / Updated: Jul 25, 2021, 06:00 IST Picture for representational purpose only A businessman who took a restaurant in Amruthalli on sub-lease during the first lockdown for Rs 6 lakh, got the shock of his life when he returned after the recent lockdown. All the equipment, furniture and even utensils were gone. The businessman Basheer Z had taken the place on lease from Yeshwant in July last year. He put in some money to improve the decor, and got the restaurant up and running, so the men who sub-leased the place wanted it back. When Basheer told them to return his money, they said they would pay in installments. The Great Men of Dhaka University-562371

Straight Talk Abdul Mannan 3rd July, 2021 11:55:48 AM On 1st. of July Dhaka University celebrated its 100th anniversary. As the country along with rest of world is going through a devastating pandemic, killing thousands of people, the Centenary Celebration was a bit lacklustre and token excepting few alumni publishing some commentaries in some national dailies and a handful coming to talk on TV and arranging few webinars. The Vice-chancellor and his colleagues also planted few saplings to mark this historic occasion. One hundred years of existence of a university in a country like Bangladesh is definitely an occasion to be proud of. For my generation it is more so because as a student we could also experience Golden Jubilee of the University in 1971 but as the country was inching towards the Liberation War there wasn’t much scope for any celebration, excepting DUCSU publishing a twelve page tabloid sized bulletin. There were few seminars at TSC.

From a Prayer to a Call to Arms and Action

In December 1921, almost a hundred years ago, Kazi Nazrul Islam wrote what would be his most iconic poem: "Bidrohi." The poem would transform him from the Soldier Poet to the Rebel Poet. "Bidrohi" was  unlike any poem written at the time as the very first lines reveal: "Bolo bir/Bolo unnato momo shir/Shir nehari amari, notoshir oi shikhor himadri" [Speak, Hero, say,/ My head

Opinion: Biden's recognition of Armenian genocide reflects dispensability of Turkey

Story highlights Turkey’s response has been on the predicted lines. President Erdogan accused President Biden of yielding to political pressure from “radical Armenian circles and anti-Turkey groups” and asked him  to “reverse this wrong step immediately” President Joe Biden will be remembered by the global Armenian community as the first  US  President who formally described the large-scale massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks during the First World War as “genocide” . He did so through a Presidential statement on April 24, 2021. The  day is commemorated by Armenians all over the world as “Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day”  Ten million Armenians including an estimated seven million Armenian diaspora spread all over the world have been demanding the recognition of Armenian Genocide by the Turkish Ottoman regime during and after the World War 1.
