The past two years have been the toughest of my career as a crime journalist in Northern Ireland. I ve been abused, harassed, and targeted by Loyalist paramilitaries who have not only threatened to shoot me dead, but to rape one of my children. When my name was spray-painted on walls alongside gun crosshairs, I sat back and asked myself, how did it get to this? How have terrorist thugs, supposedly under the watch of police, been able to succeed with such ease in putting a target on my back?

BELFAST, Northern Ireland The town of Carrickfergus, along with four other Union Loyalist towns and cities, has been beset with violence over the past weeks casting further doubts the current political stability in Northern Ireland will last much longer.
More troubling, however, is the involvement of youth, as young as 12-years-old, being forced into the violence, coerced into despicable deeds by adults with sinister motives.
Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People Koulla Yiasouma said those children were often the victims of gangs linked to sectarian paramilitary outfits still harboring past political grievances. ....

Two men appear in court over Belfast riots

Two men charged in connection with riots in Northern Ireland were today denied bail on grounds that they could re-offend - as police were pelted with stones and missiles on an eighth night of violence. 
Matthew Shaw, 32, and Jonathan Maitland, 25, both from Belfast, appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court, having been arrested following the riots on Thursday night.
Shaw was charged with rioting while Maitland was charged with rioting and possessing petrol bombs in suspicious circumstances.
It came after another chaotic night on Friday which saw 14 police officers injured, bringing the total number of officers hurt in the recent disorder to 88.  ....
