Almost immediately after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new law changing some voting procedures, the lawsuits started flying. The League of Women Voters and others are seeking to block SB 90, which they call a “voter suppression” bill, from taking effect. Florida’s Republican-dominated Legislature followed the lead of GOP lawmakers in other states to address concerns about potential voter fraud, even though no significant problems have been identified in the 2020 election in Florida or other states. So what does the new law mean for voters in Polk County? Supervisor of Elections Lori Edwards said the changes would have been much more dramatic if initial versions of SB 90 and other proposed bills had passed. ....
LAKELAND Mike Musick edged Shandale Terrell on Tuesday night to win Lakeland s Southeast District seat in the runoff election. Musick received 50.7% of the ballots cast for the May 4 runoff. He beat Terrell by a slim margin of 146 votes out of the 10,646 ballots cast, according to the unofficial results posted by Polk County Supervisor of Elections. Musick will be sworn into office at the upcoming May 17 City Commission meeting to serve the remaining seven months of former City Commissioner Scott Franklin s term. Franklin resigned last year upon launching his successful campaign for U.S. House District 15. I think the city chose the right candidate, Musick told The Ledger. I will get to the hard work. ....
LAKELAND Mike Musick is Lakeland s newest commissioner and the incumbent reigns supreme in Haines City. On Tuesday, Lakeland and Haines City held runoff elections to determine open seats on the city commissions. The runoffs were held as a result of candidates failing to secure the majority of the vote that would have been required to cinch the early April election when competing against a larger field of candidates. And in both elections, results were razor-thin. In Lakeland, small-business owner Musick beat educator Shandale Terrell with 50.69% of the vote compared with Terrell s 49.31%. Only 146 votes divided the two candidates in the race for the Southeast District D commission seat vacated by U.S. Rep Scott Franklin. ....
HAINES CITY In a showdown reminiscent of 2017, incumbent Anne Huffman will face challenger Kenneth Kipp in a runoff election on May 4 for a seat on the Haines City Commission. Huffman defeated Kipp, then the incumbent, for the position four years ago. Like this year, the two competed against additional candidates in an initial election before heading to a runoff when they both failed to secure the 50% plus one threshold needed to secure the commission seat. After the election, Huffman would become the first Black woman to serve on the Haines City Commission. Kipp had previously served on the commission for one term. ....
