Lancaster County man faces years-long wait for affordable, accessible housing


The booming housing market, the COVID-19 pandemic and the eviction moratorium created a perfect storm for a Lancaster County man who said he is now on the verge of homelessness.Matt Witmer has been renting a home in Lititz for about 20 years, but that s about to change. I have an eviction notice of Aug. 31, he said.The owner of the home is taking advantage of the booming real estate market and selling the property, creating a major problem for Witmer. There isn t any affordable housing open that is accessible for wheelchairs, he said.Witmer has reached out to social service agencies around the county. Because of the eviction moratorium, rentals just aren t opening up.Witmer s income took a hit during the pandemic. He had been a private guitar teacher for decades, but the pandemic put a stop to that.Witmer said there s a two-year to three-year waitlist for a place that would work for him.Some of Witmer s former students and friends are trying to help. Olympian Casey Kaufhold's elementary teachers not surprised by her success


The summer Olympics are underway next week.Lancaster County’s own Casey Kaufhold – and the rest of the U.S. archery team – began their journey to Tokyo on Thursday.For Kaufhold, the journey began years ago. Even her elementary school teachers knew she was bound for great things.Before she aced the U.S. Olympic archery trials, she was an ace student in the Conestoga Valley School District. We are Smoketown proud of Casey, that s for sure, fourth grade teacher Gina Novak said.Her teachers at Smoketown Elementary School remember her as a confident, happy young lady. Even as a first-grader, she had a unique gift. Hempfield school board to hold meeting about policy for transgender athletes


Should transgender athletes be allowed to compete on high school sports teams?It s a question being debated around the country and here in the Susquehanna Valley.It will be the focus of Tuesday night s Hempfield School District board meeting.Dozens of people are expected to speak at the meeting.The issue gained attention in the spring when a transgender athlete wanted to join the girls track team.A statement on the district website reads, Recently, members of the Hempfield community have raised important questions about district athletics, with thoughtful concerns about athletic integrity, student participation and eligibility, gender equity, and safety. The board created a committee – which includes students, coaches and administrators – to examine the district policy for transgender athletes. We wanted to hear everything. We wanted to hear what everybody had to say so that we had a really well-rounded base to try to make some kind of decision how we move forward here, ....
