Child Migration and Stolen Generations in Popular Historical Consciousness
In the mid-1990s, harrowing stories emerged of child migrants and Stolen Generations who had been taken from their families. Side-by-side, these narratives produced unprecedented responses in public discourse, yet scholars have struggled to make sense of the cacophony of debate, the millions of marching feet and the mountain of writing inspired by these histories. Tim Calabria’s project will assess the extensive papers left by Sir Ronald Wilson, president of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission during this period, and seek to contribute to the understanding of this profound moment of social change in Australia, as people concurrently engaged in the Reconciliation movement and grappled with the bleak outcomes of child migration for many institutionalised children. ....

'I want to scream and scream': Australian nurses on the Western Front were also victims of war


The revival of interest in Anzac since the 1980s has depended in part on the repositioning of soldiers as victims. We rarely celebrate their martial virtues, and instead note their resilience, fortitude and suffering.
This shift in emphasis opens up more promising space for the inclusion of women. Nurses were not warriors - they were caregivers. But they too suffered trauma as a result of their service.
In what must be regarded as something of a miracle, no Australian nurses were killed. But like the men they devoted themselves to, they were worn down and in some cases shattered by the horrors they witnessed. ....

One absolutely irreplaceable star has left a Rotorua family broken after their young boy went to sleep on Christmas night and never woke.
However, the 12-year-old s family has found comfort in knowing he died happy
after the most beautiful day where his infectious smile never left his face.
Shane White suffered from cerebral palsy - although suffered was not something Shane would let you believe, his nana Anne Donnell said. ....
