Bronx Irish Catholic By Peter Quinn, Contributor In the 1950s, the Bronx was a melting pot of immigrants and first-generation families: Jewish, Italian, and Irish alike. To some it’s a nation with well-defined borders, like France or Sweden; to others, it transcends borders, à la Ireland or Korea. For many, I think, the term native land invokes something more intimate and parochial: a patch of earth that, no matter where life takes us, stays synonymous with home. Comments The Association of Irish and Celtic Festivals (AICF) is proud to be hosting A Celebration of St. Brigid, with support from the Embassy of Ireland, celebrating an Irish saint and Celtic goddess with music from a mix of celebrated female Irish musicians. St. Brigid is one of Ireland’s patron saints, although not quite as famous as her male counterpart, St. Patrick, but has legends and tales all her own. The AICF, which is dedicated to bringing the Irish culture to the United States via Irish and Celtic Festivals, wanted to celebrate her importance and bring her holiday, February 1, to the forefront. ....
Wrestling team wins 2 of 3 tournaments as a team In only its second year of official varsity status, the Cassville girls wrestling team is on track for some big accomplishments and soon. This year, the team has wrestled in the NWA Tournament at Bentonville West (Ark.), the McDonald County Tournament and the Diamond State Tournament at Springdale Har-Ber (Ark.), taking third in the first tourney and winning the last two. Im expecting big things from this group this year, and especially next year, said Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach. They are a fun group to coach. This year, well have districts, sectionals and state, and weve set our goals high. All our girls want to make it to state, and the three who went last year are set on getting on the podium. ....
